How to Install a barn beam as a heavyweight mantelpiece?
I received an old barn beam hewn white oak panels to attach to plaster scattered over a gas fireplace. The beam is 10 "x 6" x 6 "and weighs in excess 135lbs.What would be a good way to insert this in the wall preferably nothing showing? The weight, obviously concerns me. I plan on using a stone veneer around the mantel once it is installed.
I guess you do not want consoles, so here is my trick. Use the large screws at least 1 / 2 inch wide and 6 "long (at least). Mark the area where the mantel and drill a pilot hole at each bolt in the center of your 6 "of space. Screw in screws about 3 1 / 2". Making Marks concerned in the back of the mantel and drilling the holes slightly larger than the head of the screws. Adjusting dry to make sure they work. Then fill the holes with epoxy resin, epoxy, stain GAL and construction adhesive for use on the back of the mantle, which goes against the drywall. Press firmly against the wall and use 2×4 for sure until the epoxy sets. This is true for wood fireplaces and stone heavier counterparts.
