Foo Dog Guard

What Foo dog symbolize?
Is it Japanese or Chinese? I know they put in front of the temples are guards, but what else is it symbolizes? What is the meaning of having 2? I'm thinking about getting a tattoo on the back to go with my traditional Japanese tattoos also sometimes see pictures of them holding a sphere? What's this
They are really imperial guardian lions (commonly called "foo dogs"). Are pairs, male and female. As you face the entrance, the man is on the right with a ball under his paw, and the female is left with a cub under her paw. Symbolically, the male guards the structure of the house or building, while the female guards of the family inside. The ball is the "prime of life, the puppy is "life cycle", or heaven and earth.
